REPETITIVE TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION
(rTMS)

fields of dreams - How Magnets Move The Mind
A promising and emerging alternative to medication is neuromodulation in the form of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS), which alters brain activity and connectivity, and subsequently changes behaviours or thoughts.
This research will study the effects of rTMS on the brain, integrating studies of single cells, defined circuits and behavioural outcomes, to understand how brain plasticity can be harnessed to treat depression.
rTMS induces electrical current flow in specifically targeted areas of the brain and this has been shown to improve the condition of people suffering from clinical depression. Why and how this happens isn’t exactly clear.
Join the research team at Perron Institue WA and their PLEX Research partners as they seek to unravel the underlying mechanisms of this effect and explore the promissing developments for people with lived experience of mental illness.

Episode 1 - What Happens When the Brain Changes?
To kick off the new SYNERGIES programme at Perron Institute, Principal investigator and brain plasticity superstar Professor Jennifer Roger takes the PLEX-RPs through a brief overview of what she is researching and why

Episode 2 - The Hemispheres Of The Brain
The idea that your brain is separated into two havles, each one having a monopoly on creativity or analysis, has entered the vernacular.

Episode 3 - What is rTMS?
Gizmos on the head and machines that go beep? Before the team begin to define their roles in the research project, everyone needs to know what rTMS is all about.

Episode 1 - Pre-clinical Patient Profiles
Having already established that the PLEX - Research Partners won’t be the ones having their brains ‘zapped’, who exactly will be included in the upcoming clinical trial and how do they qualify?

Episode 2 - OK, So How Exactly Does This rTMS Thing Work?
In the previous episode we heard about the mechanics of receiving rTMS treatment but how exactly does flooding the brain with a magentic field change the way we think?

Episode 3 - The Good, The Bad & The Plasticity
In an effort to clarify the mechanism behind rTMS and how much it relies on brain plasticity, Alynka identified the good connections without bringing the bad along with you.

Episode 4 - All I Want For Christmas Is...a $20m Brain Scanner
A brain scanner is a very serious piece of scientific kit with a massive price ticket beyond that of mere mortals - but, as the holidays approach, the SYNERGIES rTMS gang are hoping for something special in their stockings...

Episode 5 - Time Well Spent
One of the key considerations of rTMS therapy is the individual treatment duration and the overall period of treatment required to effectively alleviate symptoms. In this video it’s time for some timely advice

Episode 1 - Walking The Ethical Line
One of the key considerations of rTMS therapy is the individual treatment duration and the overall period of treatment required to effectively alleviate symptoms. In this video it's time for some timely advice...

Episode 2 - A PhD Deconstruction
One of the key considerations of rTMS therapy is the individual treatment duration and the overall period of treatment required to effectively alleviate symptoms. In this video it's time for some timely advice...

Episode 1 - Lifting the Curtain...
To help the rTMS team get a clearer picture of the process at the heart of the research project, a quick tour of the equipment involved is in order and a chance to lift the laboratory curtain

Episode 2 - Sham Alama Ding Dong...?
One of the important aspects of all research is to measure the “real” against the “fake” and rTMS is no different. So just how do you make it seem like everyone is eating the same treatment when part of it.

Episode 3 - To Treat Or Not To Treat
As the rTMS team prepare to do a hands on dry run to demonstrate the process, they ask is this treatment or research?

Episode 5 - And Now For The Hard Cell
The SYNERGIES Research Partners squirm a little as the Principal Investigator Professor Jenny Roger reveals her favourite room….and her passion for living brain cells.
